As its name suggests, Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art originating from Brazil. A synthesis of judo and Japanese ju-jitsu, BJJ takes its basic combat techniques while focusing on ground wrestling. Like all martial arts, and more broadly like all combat sports, BJJ involves the use of suitable equipment. Discover all the BJJ equipment that we offer on our site.
The kimono is the most important equipment in BJJ. It is a loose garment, designed to facilitate gripping, in order to make your opponent fall to the ground to submit him. BJJ kimonos are more resistant than the kimonos used for practicing judo. This superior resistance is necessary, because BJJ kimonos are much more stressed than judo kimonos. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is indeed a combat sport that emphasizes grappling, involving grabbing the opponent by the kimono roughly to make him fall to the ground. BJJ kimonos must therefore meet the constraints imposed by this martial art.
The BJJ kimonos that we offer are designed to resist twisting and gripping without tearing or deforming. They have reinforced seams, particularly at the armpits, side openings and hems. You will therefore be able to train intensively with your BJJ kimono without fear of tearing it.
Choose a kimono size larger than your usual size. BJJ kimonos tend to shrink by 5% after machine washing. To limit the shrinkage of your kimono, do not put it in the dryer. Let it air dry.
The BJJ belt
The belt is an essential piece of equipment for practicing BJJ. It has two functions. One is practical, the other symbolic. First, it is used to keep the kimono in place, even during grappling phases. It then allows you to identify your level, depending on its color. Indeed, as in most martial arts, Brazilian jiu-jitsu has a belt system.
The color of the belt indicates the level of the practitioner, in relation to their technical knowledge, their fighting skills, and more broadly their mastery of BJJ. At the beginning, you wear a white belt, then a blue belt, a purple belt, a brown belt, a black belt, a black and red belt, a red and white belt and finally a red belt, when you have reached the top of the art of BJJ.
You will find on our site BJJ belts made of ultra-resistant cotton in purple, brown and black.
Other essential BJJ equipment on Le coin du ring
A kimono and a belt are not enough to practice BJJ. You will also need to wear the following BJJ equipment:
· Polyester BJJ shorts with an adjustment and closure system so that they stay in place throughout the session.
· Leggings for women: this garment is not only dedicated to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but it will allow you to train in the best conditions, as it is designed to perfectly wick away perspiration.
· A rashguard for men: this tight-fitting garment with short or long sleeves is worn under the kimono. Made of polyester and elastane, it allows perspiration to wick away more easily.
